Magic meeting

I have these days the rare opportunity to hang out with Tony Chang. And I think it's great thing to be able to share (more him than me) so easily and to cross our opinion on some questions we ask ourselves.

I can tell you he showed some incredible pieces. And I was baffled. I will next time show him some tricks of mine and try to get his opinion on it.

I've talked before about Tony Chang before but I want to be sure that I'm coherent with my way of thinking. And I can assure that he has various material not published so I'm not afraid he will go in the bin as some T11 character.

I will write a report at the end of the week and after that I'm going to Japan so I'll try to hang out with some Japanese magicians.

A concept I like quite much.

I was reading quickly the opus magazine vol 1 recently and have given some time to one trick about 2 selections and the presentation seems to be very good. I will up to date references later when I have the pdf under my hand.

The effect is in fact quite simple. A spectator choose 2 cards and put it back in the middle. By cutting the deck the 1st selection is produced in the center of the deck.This one is placed on the table face down. The magician turns the deck face up and while spreading cards he reveals a face down card. When he turns it over, it's not the 2nd selection but the 1st and on table the 2nd. So quite simple but here he introduced a very clever solution to dissociate the 2 selections in spectator's mind.

He asks first to remember the card then to forget it. Genius.

There is good quiproquo in this situation but awesome.

I've came up with a line I like in order to reveal the travel.

"What is the card I've asked you to remember?"

"...x of y" maybe applying here a bit of psychology in order to delay the answer or even better try the spectator to say the 1st selection's name?

"The strange thing here is because I've told you to forget the 1st one, you actually remember it much more than the 2nd one. This would explains why I have here still the 1 st selection."

"And because we didn't stress much on the second one, you're starting to forget it."

We come to a concept I call : brain hacking

I like it but I think the majority of you will think the opposite.

More an effect is simpler the better it is.

But I take the opposite here and want to drown the audience with effect and when the trick is over they don't catch everything but are convinced that it was awesome.

Of course the day after they will just say :

"Yesterday, I saw a magician he did an amazing thing"

"What did he do?"

"Hum, with cards but it's hard to explain. But believe me it was awesome."

Is this last sentence disturbing anyone?

Does the audience need to recall the whole trick or the fun he had is what it's most important no matter you're achieving to get it?

I think before wondering if it's a good signature trick or whatever. We need to focus on audience feeling.

Just a little thing

Last Wednesday, I met a guy who was in fact a magician. Honestly, I was quite happy and interested by sharing some thoughts or tricks. He asked me to perform some tricks. After that he's showed me some of his materials I was so disappointed. He performed dr daley trick and another classic. WTF. What was he thinking? And he claimed to be magician for 12 years... Despite that I think he was a good performer, he also showed us a variation of fiber optics that was very satisfying. Just not a magician guy which may not be bad at all.
I'm for sure a magician guy and you can testify that I've said I don't think it's the best solution in order to evolve because you will tend to be in a too technical / justified magic. (Dani Daortiz talk at EMC was great on this subject by the way). But still if you don't "hang out " with magicians you tend to be stuck with your assets and manage to create or even tweak.

A book I liked, ten on deck by Ian Baxter

This is a small book of 40 pages, but there is sweet materials in there.

I really advice you to read it. Even it's 70's, well this is quite modern.

It contains 10 tricks and here are the ones I liked.

Cheeky aces, which is a bundle of reverse, change, separation in a sucker trick way of 2 four of a kind. The structure is clever and the effect is great.

The somersault card, in order to not perform ACR when you're asked for a trick go on this one, simple and direct.

The wallet mystery is an innovative method for a classic trick without gimmicked wallet.

Honestly, the remaining materials are good too but I can't assure you I will once perform it so I've decided to include it in my list.

Besides that I've started studying my Hungarian lecture notes and some materials are a bit old school but found a cool variation.

Finally, I will also keep reading provocative hypnosis by Jorgen Rasmusen.

Trip

I've been these last 2 weeks in few cities, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Istanbul with friends. It wasn't a magic trip at all but every time I'm wanting to discover the magic sphere in places I don't know.

So what I do each time is to check if there is magicshop or any organization i may be able to go.

For this last trip I had one hit in Budapest for a shop. I went there, salesman barely talked english but it doesn't matter. I'm here in a foreign country and if someone should be frustrated it would be them because I'd stayed in their country and didn't know hungarian.

I've bought a booklet of the "best hungarian card magician" but I haven't started to read it so when I'll finish it I'll maybe write a review about it.

I'm also quite pissed off against myself because I didn't go party enough I couldn't do enough magic and experience other cultures' reactions to magic.

Well, this is a bit sad but it's all for magic in my next trip I will definitely perform more.

Sometimes you see beautiful effect but once you know the solution you don't want to perform it anymore whereas the effect is great.
I had this feeling while watching both Noel Qualter alarmed and i deck. I was very intrigued by the effect but the explanation is a bit hard to perform and don't offer liberty for me. In fact I think I'm wrong and should focus more on the effect than the solution because your public won't or shouldn't (it depends on your level) understand how it works, well this is the meaning of magic.

This comes to the trendy subject which is about criticizing the ACAAN because of it's more an equation to solve between magician than a real audience thing. It's true you could do a CAAN (forget the "any" part) which is easier and go on. Your public won't notice any difference because they actually don't know that the ACAAN exists.

You may think it's an magician exclusive dvd (because it's a dvd). Of course not it's available on amazon at £3,49. WTF again. The shipping costs more than the video, furthermore create the DVD itself may cost more than the price.

Back to the content, there are entertaining ideas but sometimes I feel like they're forgetting the fact if the audience thinks after the bet's wording it's impossible... then they will never take the bet.

For instance take a pen cap (bic) and drop it in a empty beer bottle and lay this bottle on the table. Do you think you can take back the cap without touching anything?

Again WTF... who will take the bet unless they no the solution.

I'm really wondering how http://pasteboardpimps.tumblr.com/ for instance is keeping such a high activity of his blog.

I was quite active in April but here in May I didn't have any inspiration.

I've seen few videos as the Paul LePaul by Paul Wilson... what a dumb trick. Sorry it's not because we have the same name you can/dare release such poor material.

Same critic goes to Jay Sankey's Bending the real. This is bad bad... It looks like a magic dvd but it's not.

Today I want to talk about a Japanese magician. I have his book and his booklet, both are actually great. His name is So Sato and he's an amateur magician.

He has came up with a good triumph's version.

This is the one selection's version, the original version contains two.

I love the handling, we can notice a bit of Lennart Green influence with the mixed up display and honestly I've killed lot of guys with this one.

His materials are available for a long time but sadly for you only in Japanese and I think it's still impossible to get it from the rest of the world because Japanese retailers used to ship their products only in Japan.

But I have lot of expectancy from you and I think you may find the solution just by watching this video or the original one.

I'm quite generous today and in order to excuse my last absence I'm going to give you a clue.

The key point here is not to focus on technique that by the way he executes very smoothly but on the choreography because it's what makes this trick so deceiving.

These last days I have been quite in a magic mood and have watched and read bunch of stuff.

First I've kept playing on the lazy rise/falling elevator duet in order to a decent result. In fact I'm not able to perform both but working on it. Wait for me I'm quite enjoying giving hard time to my small hands. I have now in mind a good effect I need to find a good flow and justified sequences but the effect could be cool.

-Two cards are chosen, one is the elevator card which we reveal and the 2nd one which is put back in the middle.

-Elevator card starts to climb to the top but pass through the selection so the performer make the card falling a bit.

-He spreads the deck but both above and below elevator card's cards are not the selection. (elevator card is still the genuine one)

-Performer retrieve these cards and the elevator card has changed in the selection.

I hope you'll enjoy it. Not very powerful but quite cute I'll say.

Today I was reading Jon Allen's book, Experience and stopped on the oralgami. What a nice trick. 'So' what I like : clever, mindblowing, easy to do, what else. Which brings me because of the techniques involved in the trick to Joshua Jay's cornered, a few years old material. It's a video produced by penguin magic before Joshua Jay has started vanishinginc with Andi Gladwin. This one too, so sweet, yummy. One of the most practical bill travel I've ever seen. Well I admit not being a close up expert but it's very deceiving. If you want you can appreciate my point of view as a layman. Isn't it even better?!

Elevator

I've always been intrigued by the raise rise move by ray kosby. It's a difficult move and lot of easier techniques have a appeared after that with one hand and the two. I've known the existence of lazy rise for more than one year but I've never spent time on it. No offence chris mayhew I don't know the reason myself.
But finally, I've decided yesterday to learn it. You'll ask me why, because I have to learn it now for an effect.
All this elevator moves have only one duty : rise. Not a single one fall ... until recently, the falling elevator. It's not from me but from Bizau Vasile Cristian. Not revolutionary it's even logical in the conception but the most important thing it works.

Here is my point now you can have the card rise and fall at your will in the deck. Here a situation I'm working on : Imagine having two cards selected, one will be lost and the other one will be used to retrieve the first one. You start by rising the card and you'll say I think it's a bit too far we have to lower the card a little. When you spread the deck the spectator will notice that the card just above once turned up is the selection.

Bonus : Chris Mayhew during his lazy rise explanation said : "[...] That's why you add a little bit of movement in this case some shaking especially I like to do it down here on my crouch area ... it's very subliminal."

I was quite busy recently in order to prepare my exam so I apologize for the delay.

This last month I've not spent much time on magic. I'm quite satisfied with my materials actually now and I prefer to master my stuff rather than exploring new landscapes. I have now a visual routine, a vietnam plot, an ACAAN and a variation of the trick which can not be explained. In fact I have other creation but I'm not working on it these days.

I've showed few tricks to a magic buddy who is used to perform in order to live and told me that it's definitely a bit complicated for laymen audience. Of course I'm enough objective to understand and accept his critics but I've thought there is a magic which is able to fit both magicians and laymen.

For instance lot of professional magician think ACAAN is definitely a brainstorming between magician and shouldn't be performed for laymen for simple reason they won't catch the complexity of the plot and will simply notice that you retrieve a card at a given position. Whereas I'm thinking it depends on the performance and how you introduce the plot. Because I like routine and not 30 seconds trick where you only watch performer's hand, ACAAN shouldn't be only a take/think of card ; give me a number between 1 and 52 ; take the deck and count to this position.

In my pattern I'm more likely to have a card selected ; ask the spectator to put it aside in his mind in order to come back to it later while I start on a new thing. I try then to wait in order to make the revelation more astonishing.

10 cards poker deal performance idea

I was quite surprised by this but with 10 cards poker deal you are able to win all the time.

In fact it's more powerful than that because you can either choose to win or lose.

Don't you see the opportunity here?

Introduce the way how pro poker player use to play a game.

A good gambler is someone who lost a bit but win a lot.

No one can win all the time so you have to minimize your lost and maximize your win.

Have a prediction on a piece of paper on which you have written:

1 : the spectator win

2 : the performer win

3 : the performer win

The start looks like a 3 cards monte and you on purpose take the jonas card.

During this 1st phase you show how the game will be played.

For the second phase and the third this time you don't take the jonas card and you leave it to him.

You finish by saying it's useless to always win because no one will play with you so the best way to keep increasing your money is to control the game.

In order to prove this point I've written here a memo before the start of the game, can you read it.

I maybe a bit wrong by revealing too much during the ante-prediction revelation but I'm thinking it can give false explanation to make the trick "un-back-trackable".

I had a real great feeling this week, I've fooled one of my best magic buddy and damn this tastes good.

To sum it up because I don't want to give too many ideas (I cherish too much the method), it's my take on the trick that can not be explained. You may be wondering how it's possible to have a variation on it but I think this is the most similar trick which exists and even it's less impromptu, I don't need to see the face of the cards and have much more outs. Finally I don't ask the spectator's card. In fact it's a mix of this plot with an impossible location without looking the face of the cards.

One advise to you reader, if you want to fool your magic buddy even if it's not the best thing in magic go on the trick that can not be explained.

The first one has just launched thebluecrown with his buddy Dan Hauss.

Calen Morelli is very active with his 365 project on youtube through Penguin Magic and releasing also on T11.

Patrick Kun and Tony Chang are a bit everywhere ellusionist/vanishinginc for the first one and D&D/vanishinginc/thebluecrown.

I don't know how much they make but I hope they will be enough clever to not disclose all their works in 1 or 2 years and like lot of T11's "star" be thrown away like a junk.

I'm not fan of Morelli's work but I have to admit this is tremendous how he is always able to publish never-bad idea on his channel and for that I'm respecting him.

By the way particularly to Patrick Kun, can you sometimes publish your own work?! It's not cool to sell old materials or even modern one.

I hope for you and for those who want be like them to cherish more your work and keep it for you and your close friend.

Jack Parker's 21 card trick

52 memories is a great book. It's not very expensive and it explains very solid tricks.

I borrow this book from a friend and this week I've just read the 21 card trick chapter.

One thing there is killer trick in here.

As a magician I have to admit I hadn't been in the mood of studying this plot but laymen will love it for sure. There is so many times when you meet people they will show the only they know : the 21 cards trick.

Here it's so easy to go on, you'll just need to perform sunken 21. This one require no sleight of hand just a bit of mental investment and you put the crowd on fire because usually you need to make 3 rows but this time with only one row you reveal the card. It kills even magicians you have interested.

Of course there is lot of great modern trick in this one.

P161 : Charged cards, recently it's a bit the trend but Beam had thought about it 25 years ago and it's pretty convincing.

Loved 2 things.
When he did the marked deck check by dribbling the deck in front of the spectator and saying not marked deck.
The second is when he says never forget the spectator's name during a memory routine...

Marked deck

I have to admit generally I'm against any sort of gimmick or gaff. More precisely I don't perform props which include it.

Even if it's not fair I decide to not count the marked deck as a gimmicked deck.

Don't ask me why.

Maybe because it's invisible.

So I decide to do some research on the subject and besides the daub/juice which is more a gambler thing and works much more efficiently on Bee cards, every marking system use Bicycle, Bicycle, Bicycle...

The consequence is if I use any other playing cards' brand no one will ever doubt that it can be marked.

This was my 1st point.

Other thing I disagree with is all the Ted Lesley/Boris Wild. I don't think because the mark is physically written on the card you catch it faster than a symbol or any different marking system.

It's just easier to start with.

However for selling your deck this is the best way.

I quite like the STUD like I said before and take this brand as a support for my marking system.

Well I spend a bit of time on it and my idea to use a balance symbol on the back design and to unbalance it by erasing one line or two.

First I was writing on it with some pen but I didn't find it enough contrasting. I remembered when I was a kid I used to paint some warhammer (heroic fantasy figurine) and when you had finished painting one you add some black ink on it to give more contrast to it. How does it work? Ink doesn't color the surface but only the corner. I use the same principle for my marked deck.

I scratched a line and with a fountain pen I just touch it with the tip and the ink goes all along the scratch. Magic...

Of course you can use this for you but it's always better to create your own system (as a memorized deck?!)

My magic

Recently I'm quite interested by mentalism that you can practice on the go.
Well I'm currently thinking that this is the thing after card magic. I imagine a show where you start with some visual magic, slowly go for coincidence with cards and finish by some killing mentalism effect. You start classic in order to end personal. I want the spectator to get the feeling having been part of an unique experiment (again if you read me) where he is an actor. I don't want to astonish but do people think there is bunch stuffs in this world you can't understand and you should accept it. The worst thing here is that you likely prefer it.

Practicability

I think you will agree that there is 4 types of trick:

-The one that is not good.

-The one that is average but easy to do.

-The one that is good but too hard to do. (3)

-The one that is great and furthermore practical. (4)

I think we'll both agree on the first two but I want to spend some time on the last 2 point which from now on I will call (3) and (4).

There is lot of routines out there from various magicians.

When you learn a new one or create one you first analyse the effect. Is is powerful enough, will it deceive your audience...

Once you know or create the solution you'll probably try to balance both solution and effect.

Now a question should appears in your mind. Is it practical?

What does it mean?

Is the effect enough strong to use all the techniques/gaff/setup which are involved in?

For instance imagine an effect where you need a 12 cards setup for a single effect. You won't probably do it for the simple reason you don't think the effect worth all the setup needed.

Personally I think the Grail (trick I talked about this morning) will fit in (3) because even if it's an excellent effect and very clean but unfortunately it doesn't worth the set up. Whereas an effect like Diplopia by Paul Vigil belongs to (4) for the simple reason that with 2 techniques you obtain a killer effect. You just have to work on a glimpse and the clocking. This is one of my favorite effect and I always get good reactions with it also because it fits to my character.

But don't think because it's gaffed I won't like it. We can example here use the Kickback effect by Ryan Swigert which involves few props but deliver an awesome impact. I'm also quite in fond of Dice man by Andy Nyman and Kollosal killer by Kenton Knepper. I file all this tricks in the (4) because of their practicability.

To sum it up analyze your trick and try to calculate the practical/effect ratio. If it's under 1 don't do it...

Close prediction/selection

I've just realized a funny thing.

An effect where a match between a close prediction with a card occurs is much more stronger than retrieving a lost selection.

Well I watched yesterday The grail by Mike Rose and here the spectator doesn't choose a card but a prediction is placed face down on the table at the beginning. Furthermore the deck starts in the box and the spectator deals the card.

It's quite impressive even if it's not so practical.

Why I think it's funny because it's easier to get a prediction match than to retrieve a selection for the simple reason that you don't have to control it. Moreover since audience doesn't know what is going on, they won't be stuck on your hands trying to catch a move. Whereas if you have a selection then audience know this card will be involved in the future and will probably be the main key in routine or effect so audience will try to follow the card.

Clever methods

I was talking recently about my aacan and I've continued to stick to the presentation of the estimation thing but have changed the procedure in order to achieve getting a more practical method.
Well I'm quite in fond of automatic trick. By the way I've started to read trapdoor...just awesome.
And personally the best trick's construction is the mix of deceiving technique and a smart mathematical solution...in fact it's semi-automatic trick nothing revolutionnary. Furthermore I'm always waiting for nectar of cards.
Because of what it implies is you're now able to focus on the speech and get some freedom. We can also say that generally these types of tricks are more an experience than a show off.
I want again the spectator be part of the trick and no more the one who watch. This is my ideal magic.

Any card at any number

The berglas effect peformed by the man himself at the session has a huge influence on me. No matter the solution there is time when you see a trick it enlights you. This happenned on me and I had a flash. A past discussion with a nice magic buddy came back in my mind where he told me a good trick should not involve many techniques. I have a technique I've created few months ago and now it's time to use it effeciently. It's always a pleasure to find a meaning to your creations. Of course nothing revolutionnary but it allows you to re-fool audience with a classic card magic technique.
I combined these ideas and I came up with a solution to the acaan and I have to say I'm quite satisfied of myself on this one.
Now for some details on the solution that I won't give right now.
I don't want to focus my magic on a showoff I want the audience to participate to the trick, to be part of it and to feel clever. I want them to think because of them the magic happen. For my version I success to obtain a result where I can almost never fail. I didn't say automatic but there is 3 out and of course one of them is better than the others. I introduce this trick as an estimation performance that I miss by one.

I came back from Gloucester earlier this week.

This session was a great convention even if at the end I was a bit disappointed. I'm responsible too because I didn't try at anyway to make contact with other magician. The convention was quite well organized even if the hotel wasn't at the best location in the city I think. There was a great line-up compare to the number of participant.

I saw the real deal too, the Berglas effect performed by the man himself. Honestly I have no idea how he did it but he'll publish a book during May maybe I 'll buy it.

I thought Darwin Ortiz has good theory.

Rune Klan is really a funny and creative guy.

Happy new year everybody.

I've enjoyed my Xmas vacation a lot.

I've purchased some interesting material and keep working mine.

Next week, there is the Session in Gloucester organized by Andi Gladwin and Joshua Jay and I'm going to be present there

This is my 2nd convention, my first one was Blackpool 2010.

In order to make worth it the convention there is few things you have to get ready :

-Be social.

-Master some unknown materials as yours or some hided old-magazine one.

Because attend to a convention is far from cheap.

I'll arrive late Friday and go back Monday.

So for the math it costs me :

-70 € of flight

-75£ of convention's fee

-75£ of hotel

-£25£ of car renting

So I don't calculate the food and drinking (even if the beer is cheap in UK).

But we can expect more or less 300£ for 3-4days.

I think everybody should attend once at least to a convention and it's your duty to make it worth the bill.

You'll need to socialize in order to keep contact with some magicians and learn some marvelous tricks or technique. Really don't lose time to sleep.

I remember last year at blackpool I was so tired that I went to sleep whereas Bebel (one of the french master) performed one of his creations which he used to show twice a year and I missed it.

Here it is I'll probably write a report of the convention next week.

I have started this version on the Paul CUMMINS one.
On this take i find an interesting way to involve the groove electric switch.

Set up : Have the 2nd card from the bottom reversed.
Explain the principle, and what the spectator has to do.
For instance, you have to deal the card face up in this way (you show him as you explain) and when you think the op is the next card deal it face down.(you deal such as 6 cards face up and 1 face down. You now reverse the exemple op by showing it's not it and laying it on the face up pack.)
Hand him the deck and have him start dealing cards.
When he has his op face down on the table packet.
Offset it to your outer left side of the pack.
Take back the remaining cards and as you deal two cards on top of the op, secure a break under 3 from the bottom by explaining you won't deal each card face up because i know you don't like suspence.
Execute a turnover pass under the 3 cards and spread cards without of course revealing the face down card.
You have to get the 2nd card from the bottom in groove electric switch fashion and lay it on the tabled one as you say before revealing your op let me recap the situation.
Perform a fan and tell there is 51 cards face up and just one face down and you close the fan by executing the groove electric switch.
You've just switch spectator's op for yours.

This I've worked a lot on this paul curry's problem. But I think I still don't catch where I should go.

Well, there is the 51 faces to north's part and the more direct way.

I'm realizing that I should probably don't need to fulfill all the book of specifications and try to focus more on what the spectator sees.

The point is Stewart James has reinvented the open prediction's plot and he has closed it, put it restriction. It's just a show off between magician and not for the spectator and this is the point I blame.

For instance, BAXTER's solution solve every conditions of the 51 faces to north but it's far from being the most dramatic one.

Just one thing to say.
Do not buy luke dancy's sin city.
This one is a real crap and I don't understand how he can even release such a poor dvd unless he has wanted to scam his usual customers. It's very disrespectful.
The worst thing here is that he's not a bad magician and he has few killer thing.
I hope this dvd was mistake and he won't publish any more shit like this one.

Recently I think we're facing a new approach of card magic. The coin magic's one. Of course we can see here the influence of the visual card magic from d&d.
I think it's because card magic has been quite studied and as the easiest way to create is to get inspire from existing thing, card magic is evolving in the coin magic's way.
I noticed it when I thought there is less one ahead structure today than in 90's.

This is a come back. This time I'll try to keep posting new thing.

This year I've been quite in creation mood and kept noting everything I've created.

This last days I was inspired and I thought about a new plot.

Well not exactly.

There is no new effect like a sandwich or triumph or anything like that but still there is a different approach.

Here it is.

I called it POV which means of course point of view.

The routines' structure is like :

the spectator sees/thinks one thing but the magician sees another thing.

For instance, the spec/layman chooses one card and its loses in the deck. You spreads the deck and nothing appears.

But now you turn yourself to show what you see from your point of view...one card is return, the selection.

It was just an idea for this evening.

By the way PSG (paris saint germain/football team) has won against Marseille today.

These previous days i was searching for a new subject and with a friend, we talked about cards. 1 week ago my dad went in San Francisco so i asked him to bring me back some cards and some other stuffs like the essential of james stewart. He brought me some magic castle pack and some Karnival deck, the 3 editions. Definitely magic castle's card is not my style. My favorite brand is STUD which comes with 4 jokers instead of 2. It may be the softer and thinner card i know. In my opinion, we have this kind of order for softness, tally ho >bicycle> bee>magic castle. Of course Stud is the best for the softness. The problem is when i share it to other magician they used to say it's not cards or thing like that, more gamblers-magicians tell me that kind of thing.
So i askel you to telling me what is your favorite cards.

The better way to get new trick

You may think there is no new props these last days.
I can advise you some solutions to this.
-There is always thing in the past that you didn't notice the existence.
-Try to learn new languages and get foreign material.

If you have some magic's friend, there is often one of them who find out a routine which has been published 15 years ago in a limited edition's lecture note by an unknown magician. When he show you this routine and have to admit that he killed you, you recognize that you re a layman...To solve this problem, it's easy try to look on the various magic magazine published in the past like the crimp, looking glass or the trapdoor.

A better way i think is to learn a new language. You will definitely learn a new way to practice magic.

Sorry for this long time no post i was trying to develop a new thread about how we create trick but it was a bit difficult so for now i put it aside.
Today i will teach you the previous effect.
Let the spectator shuffles.
You get it back and by using a all round square you glimpse the bottom card.
You swing cut about the half of the deck and drop the card in your right hand on the table. You glimpse again the new bottom card and put on table this pack too.
You make choose the spec one of the pack.
*Remember the bottom card of the spec's pack.
We arrive at the 'do as I do' situation where you spread the card but hiding it from spec's view and then you upjog a card in the middle. This card has really no meaning in this trick. You take the card out and then you put in the top positing without revealing the card to the spec. You too cut the deck and switch your deck.
It's easy to know the selection from there but the baffling part is from there.
No technique just observation.
You want the spec to take the card the closest to his selection. Explain him that for instance if he took a 7 of hearts, he has to selct the 7 of diamonds. But you explanation has to be adapted to the spec's pack. If there is no 7 in her pack it won't work you have to be sure of which card he will select.
Now you've found out the card...you put both card face down on the table and you say my card was XXX and you turn face up her selection.

Je vais vous expliquer le tour présenté la dernière fois.
Laissez le spectateur mélanger le jeu.
Reprenez le jeu en main tou en effectuant un 'all around square' qui vous permettra de prendre connaisance de la carte du bas.
Coupez le jeu en deux.
Ici vous avez 2 possibilités :
-Vous exécutez un choix à l'équivoque pour faire choisir le paquet dont vous avez connaissance de la carte inférieure au spectateur.
-Vous glimpsez le deuxième paquet lors de la coupe, pour laisser réellement le choix au spectateur.

Vous arrivez dans le plot du "do as I do".
Plus explicitement vous allez demander au spectateur de faire les mêmes actions que vous.
Vous étalerez le jeu sans en montrer les faces à votre audience.
Vous oujjoggerez une carte. Vous la sortez sans la montrer au spectateur puis la placerez sur la face du jeu et couperez une fois.
Le spectateur fera strictement la même chose.
note : La carte du spectateur se trouve une avant la carte glimpsée lorsque vous étalez le jeu face en l'air. Vous n'avez pas besoin de retenir la carte que vous avez choisie.
Vous en avez fini avez les techniques. Vous voulez que le spectateur choisisse la carte la plus proche de la sienne.
Expliquez lui par exemple si il a choisi un 7 de coeur, il devra prendre un 7 de carreau.
Cependant vous ne devez pas oubliez que la consigne que vous lui donnez est à propos par rapport aux cartes contenues dans son paquet. Ne lui demandez pas de prendre une carte comme le 7 de carreau si il n'y a pas de 7 de carreau.
Après révélez vos cartes respectives.

A magician's miss / Une erreur de magicien

I'm realizing my magic goes in some points wrong way. I always try to find the latest killer trick, but not for my audience but for bluffing my magician's mates. The bad point here is layman haven't got the same sensibility than performer. It's easy to understand why, layman isn't looking your magic for find techniques or things like that but for being amazed even if some of them can be very bad clients who trying to disturb your show.
I'm a card magician and i think cardmagic tend to this behaviour. If you show your sponge ball's performance to a magician he will guess what happen even if he didn't see anything and he will comment something like it was quite well permormed but not it kills me or you deceive me. The reason is simple card magic offers much more possibilities to deceive magicians than other domain in magic.
The problem like I said before is that I'm sure magicians and laymen don't want the same thing. One of the most astonishing effect for layman is a simple transposition which involve 2 double lifts and 1 duplicata whereas the magician will try to find a new plot or technique he has never seen before. So I'm thinking i make a misstake by haven't take care enough the spectaor's point of view.
Magic is still for a layman audience but the bet would be to bluff magician too. I came with this list about what the laymen like to do.
-touch the card
-shuffle the card
-participate (think that they helped to the success of the trick)
All in-the-hand trick have a huge impact to them. (exemple : biddle trick) The reason is people think to have the control if they touch it. This can be a problem because if you ask to a magician to shuffle he will understand even if he shuffles it won't change the end of the trick.
I think about my magic repertoire and i share you one of them, it's not of mine.
effect : a full of cards has been shuffled and cut in 2 equal pack, one is given to the spectator and the other in the performer's hand. Both pick a card and replace it on top of the deck and cut the deck. They exchange the deck, the magician ask to the spectaor to find the closest card to his selection. When both do it and retrieve a card, they found each other selctions.

J réalise que la direction que prenait ma magie n'était pas bonne. J'essaye toujours de trouver le dernier effet killer, killer...plus pour les magiciens que mon public. Le problème ici est simple est que les profanes ne cherchent pas les mêmes choses que les magiciens. Il est d'ailleurs très facile d'en comprendre la raison, les néophytes veulent être bluffé, malgré certaines personnes qui semblent chercher le petit point négatif et sont là pour avoir raison. Ceci s'applique énormément chez le public homme français. On comprendra que le magicien connaissant la magie va chercher à analyser la routine présentée en distinguant certaines techniques et en ne se laissant pas entraîner par les différentes misdirections.
Je suis avant tout dans le domaine des cartes et je pense que la cartomagie tend à ce genre de comportement. Prenons l'exemple des balles en mousse, allez faire une représentation à un magicien, jamais il sera bluffé, il pourra être impressioné par la dextérité avec laquelle la routine a été mise en scène. On en vient à penser que la cartomagie offre plus possibilité que n'importe qu'elle autre domaine. Comme dit précédemment les magiciens et le public ne demandent pas la même chose. Chez le spectateur, un effet 'killer' est une simple transposition impliquant deux levées double et un duplicata alors que le magicien veut du neuf, un nouveau plot etc... Donc j'en viens à penser que j'étais égoïste car je n'essayais seulement à paraître un bon magicien par rapport aux autres magiciens.
Voici des gestes que les spectateurs néophytes aiment :
-toucher les cartes
-mélanger les cartes par eux-même
-participer (pour qu'il puisse penser qu'ils ont permis le cuccès du tour ou l'inverse dans le cas d'un sucker trick)
On résumera que les tours impliquant la présence des mains ont un fort impact. (biddle trick) Alors que le magicien si on lui propose de mélanger le jeu il saura que ça n'aura aucun impact sur la finalité du tour et par conséquent il en fera abstraction.
Je vous propose un tour que l'on m'a montré il y a quelques années.
l'effet : un jeu entier est emprunté puis coupé en 2 paquets égaux. Un des deux est choisi par le spectateur et celui restant est pris par le magicien. Les 2 choisissent une carte puis la remette sur le dessus et coupe. Ils échangent les paquets et cherchent la carte qui se rapproche le plus de leurs sélections respectives dans leurs nouveaux paquets. Quand ils montrent cette nouvelles cartes elles correspond aux sélections de l'autre.
Voilà si vous en trouvez pas encore la solution je vous l'expliquerez dans quelques jours.

僕はカードマジックをしているが、特にこの分野におきることである。それは、カードマジックが一番深いマジックだと思えるから。それによって、一般の観客は、インパクトの強いトリックを好む。例えば、transposition的なトリックはすごいインパクトな上、観客の手でマジックが行われる。マジシャん的に考えれば、唯一のテクニックはダブルリフトである。

Routine & effect/Routine et effet

Few days ago, i was talking about the meaning of the word 'routine' with a close magic's friend. We didn't have the same point of view on this issue and i was thinking to it deeper. I come to this.
We are at a point where the time haven't been so expensive. Most of magician now prefer to have a look on the last teaser on Theory 11 or D&D which takes 2 min to watch it and get an idea of the trick presented instead spending 15 minutes or half an hour to read a forum or a magazine and make evolve your magic's education. It's too much time for magician. Let's have a look on the last fashion props, we have the clipshift, the cherry control, the cascade control, the DPS. All of this have been published by D&D or Theory 11. Whereas that is quite old moves if we think to it, DPS ( diagonal palm shift ) wtf it has been released in Expert at the card table by erdnase and it exists for more than 100 years ( don't think I blame erdnase or his work)... There is few consequences on these types of website, they flood the market and everybody tend to work on the same thing. The other consequence is it makes the magic performance shorter and not for an audience but for your webcam. But it's not only the matter of these sites but the buyers have to be blame there because they ask for this easy access magic. Here is an example, you maybe look on Irving Quant's caroussel available on D&D. When i see it i thought that it quite different to D&D's spirit and it wasn't bad. The truth is Mr Quant published few years ago this trick on magic cafe. There weren't lot of replies to it whereas everybody buy it on D&D...What do we have to think? These sites use a lot the on-demand system to sell they props. That's a big scam, Chris Kenner only sell his out of control's stuff, Jason England sell second deal and bottom deal thing...I have to admit that on-demand in not always a scam, i watched joshua jay's video about bluff pass available on vanishing inc and it's quite good for 10$ you get 6 various bluff pass and in bonus you have a beautiful change. I think the trade was quite fair here.
I think close up magic is combination of 60% techniques and 40% performance.(speech, audience control...) Like I said before magic's performance is shorter, and we call a routine a 30 seconds trick. Because if it lasts more than 3 minutes nobody will watch your thing. It could be good but the 'routine' include only one effect...I'm a bit disppapointed of this current trend. Maybe I'm wrong but i don't agree with this.

Il y a quelques jours, je discutais du sens du mot 'routine' avec un bon ami de la magie. Nous n'avios pas vraiment le point de vue sur cette question à ce sujet. J'y ai alors réfléchis de manière plus approfondie et voici la conclusion a laquelle j'arrive.
Nous sommes à un moment de l'humanité où le temps n'a jamais été aussi cher. La plupart des magiciens préfèrent aujourd'hui aller regarder sur Theory 11 ou D&D le dernier trailer de 2 min pour avoir une idée sur ce qu 'il en est, au lieu de fouiller dans les forums ou les magazines pendant 15 min ou 1/2h pour trouver des informations intéressantes. Cette action semble représenter une perte de temps trop importante. Si nous jetons un coup d'oeil aux dernières techniques 'tendance', on a le clipshift, le cascade control, le cherry control ou encore le diagonal palm shift (DPS pour les intimes) qui ont toutes été remises à jour par les groupes cités ci-dessus. Si on y pense, aucun du matériel cité précédemment n'est neuf. Merde, le DPS a été publié il y a 100 ans dans expert at the card table de erdnase.(Je n'en veux absolument pas a erdnase soit dit en passant). Il y a plusieurs conséquences plutôt fâcheuses dû à l'émergence de ces sites. Ils envahissent le marché et par conséquent tout le monde se voit travailler les mêmes sources et aussi ils encouragent au final à raccourcir la magie. Une représentation de 2min30 pour un tour semble maintenant trop longue car elle n'est plus destinée à un public mais à une webcam. En réalité ce problème n'est pas seulement dû aux vendeurs mais aussi à leur public, car celui-ci demande ce genre de magie facile d'accès. Voici un exemple, D&D pour ne citer qu'eux, ont récemment mis en ligne caroussel d'Irving Quant.J'ai eu l'occasion de voir donc le teaser de cet effet et globalement je dois avouer que c'est plutot sympa comme résultat, c'est différent de ce que l'on peut voir sur D&D (même si ils font plus d'efforts que Theory 11 au niveau de l'innovation) Là où le bas blesse c'est que Irving QUANT avait dejà publié caroussel sur magic cafe dans le passé, cependant seulement quelques personnes lui avait répondu. Aujourd'hui D&D le distribue et les éloges pleuvent. Je ne sais plus vraiment quoi en penser. Les sites que je n'arrête pas de citer ont aussi développe une nouvelle manne financière pour recycler leurs vieux matériel tel que Chris Kenner qui nous ressort du Out of control (qui est vraiment un bon livre et que je conseille vivement). Cependant je dois tirer mon chapeau à Joshua Jay qui vient de mettre en ligne sa dernière vidéo instant download qui permet pour 10$ d'avoir 6 différents bluff shift et un change assez sympa, je pense ici que le deal est juste.
Je pense que la magie (close-up) est la réunion de 60% de technique et 40% de présentation. 大部分のマジシャンは本をじっくり読むよりもyoutubeで2分のビデオを観るようになっている。またはフォーラムでみんなのスレッドよりも動画を好む。この観察によって単純にわかる事はみんなが同じトリックまたはテクニックを練習すること。この２００９年で流行ったものはclipshift,cascade control,cherry controlとdiagonal palm shift。このテクニックは一切簡単にマスターできるものではないだがもう少し深く見てみると、全部theory 11やdan & daveたちがリリーズしたものである。この現在のマジックの状況を見ると少し悲しく感じる。なぜかというと現在のマジックが指揮られている感じがする。インターネットによって全部のものが短くなっている。時間を味わう習慣がなくなっている。2分３０秒のトリックが長すぎると思って興味を持たないということ正直ヤバイとぼくは思う。現在のマジックの観客は人間じゃなくカメラになっている。この問題は商売している人だけの責任ではないと思う。やはり買っている人の責任でもある。このようなビデオを消費することが問題である。もう少し考えてから商品を買ってください。この例を使いましょう。D＆Dは最近irving quant の carousselというトリックをリリースした。ぼくもそのトリックを見て、悪くないと思った。問題はこのirving quantさんはこのトリックを過去にmagiccafeでポストした。当時、いいアイデアだよといわれておわりました。だがD&Dがリリースしてからブームになった。これは不思議ではないか。その上、theory11やD&Dの様なサイトは古い商品をリサイクルする習慣をとっていて、chris kennerのtotally out of controlなどのテクニックをビデオでまたリリースしている。このようなエコヒイキなやりかたは僕にとって少し人をばかにしている感じがする。だからといって、僕がどのサイトを嫌いだと思わないでください。たとえばjoshua jayがリリースしたbluff shift bundleは反対にすごいいいビデオだとおもった。１０＄でbluff shiftを六つそれにたしてcolor change が入っている。この場合ではフェアだとおもった。
僕にとってクローズアップマジックの４０％が演技であり、残りがテクニックである。だが現在のマジックが短くなっていることによって、30秒のビデオがroutineだと受け取られている。その理由は3分以上だったらだれも見ないから。

Magician's taboo/ Le tabou des magiciens

I have the impression there is taboo between magician.
It's strange because technically a magician always cheats or deceives the spectator.
Here's what i want to talk about, why magicians don't try to use more glimpse and crimp.
It's a real cardmagic's techniques so why deprive this method for knowing and/or controlling a card after that spectator really shuffled the deck. I think it's a real killer method to bluff magician by the way. The easy finish is an impossible location. But you can do other effect which will you permit for example to not use a force technique. Because I really think that if a real deceiving classic force is not mastered, forcing is quite ugly. The fact is if you know the selection you can easily cull the other card you need for have a set up like a 4 of a kind without having a set up. You will probably tell me that you need time for doing this types of moves but think to this. Why are you practicing magic, for being seen on youtube or to offer magic in live. If the 1st choice is yours in this case this thread is not for you but if the 2nd is yours, think that magic is not only techniques. The important thing to keep in mind is to focus not on what the performer do but what the spectator think he had seen. For illustrate it I want to use this example : The performer will cull a 4 of a kind/The spectator will see if his card is missing or if there is unusual thing in the spread. So to be sure that the spectator will do what you want, you have to talk. For the previous example, the speech will be : 'Is your card always in the deck?' You have to remember a magic's performance is not an opposition but a share between you and your spectator, if you make participate your audience they will be more receptive to your magic.

J'ai l'impression qu'il existe un tabou entre les magiciens.
C'est étrange car techniquement le magicien triche ou trompe en permanence le spectateur.
Voila mon sujet, pourquoi les magiciens n'essayent d'utiliser plus fréquemment le crimp ou le glimpse. Ces 2 techniques appartiennent pourtant au domaine de la cartomagie, donc pourquoi s'en priver. Celles-ci permettent de connaître aisément la valeur d'une carte et/ou controller une carte après que le spectateur ait mélangé le jeu. Je pense que c'est un moyen vraiment bluffant meme, voire plus chez le magicien que chez le spectateur. La conclusion logique serait une 'impossible location', pourtant si l'on creuse un petit peu plus, ces techniques permettent d'éliminer un forçage qui personnellement dans la majorité des cas est très peu convaincant en dehors d'un classic force maîtrisé. Le fait que l'on connaisse la carte du spectateur permette de cull par exemple, les cartes manquantes pour former un carré. Ainsi on arrive à une situation impromptue au lieu d'une nécessitant une préparation. Vous penserez sûrement qu' effectuer ces manipulations demandent du temps dans une routine. Dans ces cas-ci, posez-vous cette question pour qui faites-vous de la magie, pour avoir des milliers de vues sur youtube ou pour une représentation en dure. Si le premier choix est le vôtre, passez votre chemin sur ce sujet sinon rappelez-vous que la magie ne se résume pas seulement à des techniques mais à une représentation. Ce qui est important est de ne pas oublier que les gestes du magicien ne sont en réalité peu important par rapport à ce que le spectateur ait vu. Ici revient la théorie assez récurrente du 'big movement hides the small one' que l'on peut entendre chez de nombreux magiciens. D'autres part il ne faut pas oublier que la magie n'est pas une opposition mais un échange, si vous faîtes participer votre public il n'en sera que plus immergé dans votre jeu.

Hello my name is paul, i m a student who has started magic 6 years ago. I decided to create this new blog for discuss about card magic in particular. I'm planning to post minimum once a week a new thread, it can be about a plot, a trick, a magician or cardmagic's mentality.
There will be 3 versions for now, in english of course but in french and japanese too. Each versions will be in the core the same but it's possible that i integrate various tips in each languages. Maybe you will try to learn the different languages.
I will up some vid on vimeo probably for illustrate my props when i will talk about a trick or plot.
So I hope you will enjoy it and expecting that you participate too.

Salut a tous je m'appelle paul, je suis un étudiant pratiquant la magie depuis 6 ans. J'ai décidé de créer ce blog pour discuter de la cartomagie en particulier. Je prévois de créer un nouveau sujet au minimum une fois par semaine, celui-ci pourra aussi bien concerner un concept, une routine, un magicien ou bien dans la philosophie de la magie.
Il y aura 3 versions du blog, une en français commet vous pouvez le constater, une en anglais et une en japonais. Chaque version sera les mêmes dans l'ensemble cependant je me laisse le droit d'ajouter des astuces différentes en fonction de la langue utilisée, ceci pourrait être une opportunité pour commencer une nouvelles langues d'ailleurs.
J'uploaderai probablement des vidéos sur vimeo pour illustrer mes différents propos lorsque je parlerai de certains tours ou concepts.
J'espère donc que vous apprécierez le contenu et j'attends de vous votre participation.

よろしくポールです。現在学生でありマジックを6年前にはじめました。このブログを作った理由はカードマジックについて語りたかったからです。予想ではこのブログに最低一週間には新しいスレッドを足したいと思います。各スレッドのテーマは一つのプロット、トリック、マジシャンやマジックの考え方について立論します。
このブログには三つのバージョンがあります。見ての通り日本語版それに足して英語とフランス語版が存在しています。それぞれの翻訳の根は同じですが、少しチップが変わる可能性があるので、もしも興味を持っていたら新しい言語を習うきっかけになると思います。
僕のスレッドを参考にビデオをwww.vimeo.comにアップロードする可能性があります。
みんながこのブログに興味を持ってもらいたいので、自由に意見を表現してください。
